Try Out All the Things … Without the Investment! – Check Out the Geek Fantasyland Rental Store

Phantom-Drone-2Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to have a DJI Phantom 2 Drone with GoPro Hero 4 to film your dog catching a frisbee or to document some other cool project you’re working on? Or maybe you’ve got a DSLR, but you’re just not sure about spending $2k on a better lens right now… what to do? Everyone in your office is doing the summer workout challenge. Do you get the Jawbone Up, the FitBit or something else? Who wants to keep buying exercise bands at $200 a pop?  Lumoid is the answer. The folks at Lumoid will rent all kinds of professional and consumer level stuff you want to use, but aren’t ready to commit to – all at very reasonable prices.

These are really good deals for professionals as well. Not ready to invest $10K in camera gear for the wedding you’re shooting next month for just $1K? You can rent all the cameras, lenses and lighting equipment you need, by the day, from Lumoid and the prices are surprisingly reasonable.

Canon70-200About to make an epic small film? You’d love to use the Epic Red system, but at $30K, it’s not going to happen. If you’ve got your shooting schedule pretty tight, you can rent the system for less than $700/day. You don’t have to buy the cow to get the milk.

They have bundle packages where you can rent several personal fitness trackers at once so you can find out from personal experience which is the best one for you instead of just reading other people’s experiences and reviews.

You keep hearing about how super sharp Canon’s L type lenses are. But $2500 for a lens? You’ve got that trip planned for Labor Day weekend – why not rent the lens for $16/day plus $9 insurance and take it for a spin?  Lumoid also sells its used rentals and even new items at steep discounts.

Google Glass – you know you want to try Google Glass. Everyone does… but unless you’re rich and/or on a special list, you’re not holding your breath. Well boom – you can RENT Google Glass for just $18/day. Their rentals are a 3 day minimum and the daily rate goes down the longer you rent it. You can also rent to buy.

Check out Lumoid on Facebook, Twitter and their website.

Photo Geeks, Check Out These High Finish, Low-Tech Pinhole Camera Beauties

ondu2Photography has come a long way since film. Changing your ISO on the fly, autofocus lenses that look for faces, EXIF data, GPS tagging, the list goes on. For photo geek purists, however, there is just something about film. Photo geeks have been making their own pinhole cameras for ages. Without a lens, the tiny hole let’s in just enough light for an exposure, while actually focusing the image. Problems with home brew pinhole cameras have included light leaks, poor durability, and varied issues with precision hole size. In their Kickstarter Campaign, the Slovian designers from Ondu are launching a slew of pinhole cameras hand crafted and stained in beautifully finished wood cases. This isn’t their first rodeo. Ondu had a successful campaign last year and they have greatly refined their already high quality work since then and are launching version 2 of their camera in sizes from pocket camera all the way to an 8×10 view camera (you supply the film holder, of course on the view cameras). The finish on these cases is unlike anything you’ve ever seen or likely ever will see on a pinhole camera. No Faraday cage is needed for these puppies – no EMP will ever take out a pinhole camera. It’s built to last – and this beautifully crafted pieces can be heirlooms that you can pass on for generations. With two weeks left on the campaign, Ondu has already quadrupled their funding goal, so this project will definitely be funded. Follow Ondu on Facebook, Twitter and their homepage.
