The Safer Way to Charge Your Phone at Night

Behold! The old-school cupholder.

Behold! The old-school cupholder.

For you whippersnappers that are too young to remember, there was a time in which there were zero cars that came with cup holders. Seriously. Even a Rolls Royce didn’t have cupholders. Not kidding. You had to make a special trip to a convenience store (back then, the only one I knew of was 7-11) to buy a plastic cup holder that would hook between your car door window and the interior paneling. These are still made for use in older, vintage cars, albeit you just don’t see them much nowadays.

The folks at ArmsReach Industries have created an adaptation of the old school cupholder with their NightHolster campaign on Kickstarter.

The NightHolster hitches to your bed frame and holds not only your drink, but also reading glasses, your Kindle and your smartphone. There’s a notch to allow the charging cables to pass through without kinking – and also keeps your phone from flying across the room if you grope for it in a stupor as you awake. No more items sliding off the bedside table with this low-tech gizmo that’s currently prototyped in high tech 3D printing.

Old School Swamp Fan Meets USB

Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 10.29.41 PMComputer geek Wing Ng came up with an idea to stay cool using some old school ingenuity and married it with USB so you can take it anywhere and use very low power to stay super cool. His easy-to-assemble COOLMORE gadget is currently on Kickstarter with just under 3 weeks left to make its funding goal.

Using an ice pack (and this could be anything – including a bottle of water you pulled out of the freezer) and a computer fan powered by USB – and boom, you’ve got down right chilly conditions. Whether this helps you cool off a car that has a defunct air conditioner or just to chill out your man/lady cave, Ng shows how the fan really cools a room by utilizing digital temperature gauges that display a significant drop in surrounding temps.

A slight switcheroo with the COOLMORE lets you easily convert it from a room cooler to a beverage cooler – and it not only keeps your drinks cool, but can actually make them even colder.

If you’ve got an air conditioner working overtime to keep your place cool, the COOLMORE can take some of the heat off your system. With the COOLMORE using minimal power to cool a room, it gives your window unit or other system a bit of a break.
