The best smartphone car dash mount I have ever used

I have tried a number of dash and glass mounts for my iPhone over the years. I scoured reviews, asked people about their dash mounts and got feedback and warnings from several owners of their own failed devices. I’ve had a few that I thought were great – for a week, then they no longer stuck to the dash due to the summer heat or just poor craftsmanship. Every car is different. Some have deep dashboards, some are shallow. Some have a very steep incline on the windshield, others do not. We’re all different heights, and some folks are all leg, where some are all body and have short T-Rex arms like myself… so it’s not always feasible to have a ‘one size fits all’ model… but the iOttie does that in spades. I’m about 5’2″ with short limbs and my husband is just shy of 6′ tall with long legs and arms, but we’re both using the iOttie in our separate vehicles.

I cannot recall the number of times (but it’s over 20, at least), that complete strangers have asked me where I got my car mount. A few times, it was people serving me in the drive-thru line of a fast food restaurant, and other times it was folks at a light at the intersection that would honk, then motion for me to lower the window so they could ask me where I got the mount. Why?! It sure doesn’t look “amazing” or different at first blush. Well, every time I’ve been asked about it, it was just as I was putting the phone back in the cradle. It takes one hand and a simple push for it to be affixed to the mount. I don’t need grow an additional opposing digit or use both hands to replace the phone in its cradle. Additionally, it’s very easy to remove the phone from the cradle with just one hand. All the other mounts I’ve encountered excel in quick removal or quick mounting – but never both… that is, until I got the iOttie.

The base has a silicon sticky mount that leaves ZERO residue on your dash or glass. You can tell it’s been there, but it easily wipes away – you don’t suddenly have a forever sticky area that collects hair and dust. In 4 years, I’ve had it start to slowly peel off twice – in the Texas summer heat. It’s a rare event, but easy to remedy… you just wash the silicon base under clean, cool tap water to ‘freshen it’ and when it dries, you re-apply it. After placing the disc in the desired place, you flip a lever that adds suction to the stick area – giving you a very secure mounting platform. Your smartphone easily pops in place and is easily removed by you when you want to – but I have never had the phone pop out on its own. I live out in the country with very, very, very, very, very rough dirt and caliche rock roads – and my phone has never popped out on its own in an iOttie. Unlike other dash mounts, you can easily access the power port and audio port in their mounts.

Remember the elegance of the iMac G4!? Beauty meets 2015…

imac_g4_motionWho can forget the design of the iMac G4? Half sphere base with a beautifully machined, articulated neck that was easy to position and was stunning to behold. Even if you didn’t remember the model, you know the look when you see it. To date, it is the most beautiful all-in-one that Apple has ever made. Based on my opinion – but my opinion is right – so there. I wanted one. Bad. Real bad (grammar nazis are freaking out… so I’ll let you know that I wanted it badly – really badly). I wanted one so bad(ly), as a matter of fact, I have a defunct one in my garage that I continually claim I’m going to re-wire and put a Mac Mini in the base to bring it back to life. Good thing no one is holding their breath waiting for me to do this. Ahem.

flotebedstandWell – boom. A company called Flote has made some elegant stands for the iPad that bring us back to that elegant design we miss. Their smaller model, which is most reminiscent of the iMac G4, is called the Orbit. It will hold your iPad securely even if it’s in a case.

Their floor stand is marketed for folks wanting to look at the iPad hands free while in bed or in a chair – but it is so elegant and well machined – it could be placed in any studio to be used as a teleprompter or video camera when you’re creating your next online course or podcast. It’s truly beautiful and has several options for positioning.

It could also be used as a check-in device or information kiosk for the lobby or waiting area at your office. It is yummy to behold.
